PEEK (Polyether Ether Ketone) is the ultimate high-performance engineering thermoplastic. With exceptional mechanical properties at elevated temperatures, outstanding chemical resistance, and inherent flame retardancy, PEEK is the material of choice for the most demanding applications in aerospace, medical, and industrial sectors.

PEEK can replace metals in many applications, offering significant weight savings (up to 70% lighter than steel) while maintaining structural integrity at temperatures up to 250°C. It is biocompatible, radiation resistant, and can be sterilised repeatedly without degradation.

Fabrication & Processing

PEEK can be machined on conventional CNC equipment using carbide tooling. It produces clean chips and good surface finishes. Due to PEEK's high cost, careful programming to minimise material waste is essential. Annealing after machining is recommended for parts requiring tight dimensional tolerances.

CNC turning and milling — use sharp carbide tools, moderate speeds
Drilling — standard HSS or carbide drill bits
Annealing — stress-relieve at 200°C for 4 hrs for critical tolerances
Bonding — epoxy adhesives after surface preparation
Note: PEEK stock is expensive — optimise nesting and minimise waste

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is PEEK so expensive?+
PEEK resin requires complex synthesis at high temperatures and the raw material cost is inherently high. Additionally, PEEK stock shapes are produced in relatively small volumes compared to commodity plastics. However, PEEK's ability to replace metals often provides overall system cost savings through weight reduction and extended service life.
Can PEEK replace metal?+
Yes — in many applications PEEK directly replaces stainless steel, aluminium, and titanium. It offers up to 70% weight savings while maintaining excellent mechanical strength, chemical resistance, and dimensional stability. Carbon-filled PEEK grades approach the strength of some aluminium alloys.
Is PEEK suitable for medical implants?+
Yes — PEEK is USP Class VI and ISO 10993 biocompatible. It is radiolucent (transparent to X-rays and MRI), making it ideal for spinal fusion cages and orthopaedic implants. Implant-grade PEEK (PEEK-OPTIMA) is specifically manufactured for medical use.
