HIPS is used extensively in vacuum forming applications, for products such as point of sale displays and refrigerator linings. The material has high impact resistance and excellent thermoform ability.

HIPS is one of the most cost-effective thermoforming materials available. It forms at low temperatures with excellent detail reproduction, making it the preferred choice for high-volume vacuum formed products in food packaging, retail displays, and appliance manufacturing.

Fabrication & Processing

HIPS is extremely easy to vacuum form, die cut, and print. It requires minimal forming temperature and reproduces mould detail accurately. HIPS can be solvent bonded with MEK or bonded with cyanoacrylate adhesive.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between HIPS and GPPS?+
GPPS (General Purpose Polystyrene) is crystal clear but brittle. HIPS has rubber particles blended in giving it much higher impact resistance but making it opaque. Use GPPS for clarity (picture frame glazing) and HIPS for impact resistance (packaging, vacuum forming).
Is HIPS recyclable?+
Yes — HIPS is recyclable (resin code #6). However, not all kerbside recycling programs accept polystyrene. Contact your local council for recycling options. HIPS can also be reground and reprocessed industrially.
Can HIPS be used for food packaging?+
Yes — food-grade HIPS is FDA approved and widely used for yoghurt cups, meat trays, takeaway containers, and other food packaging. Ensure you specify food-grade HIPS when ordering for food contact applications.
