Trade Names: Delrin, Ertacetal. Acetal is an engineering plastic with excellent dimensional stability, high mechanical strength, and natural lubricity — making it ideal for precision machined components.

Acetal is often the first choice for replacing metal components in precision mechanisms. Its low moisture absorption ensures parts maintain tight tolerances in varying humidity conditions, unlike nylon which can swell. Acetal is widely used in food processing, automotive, and general engineering.

Fabrication & Processing

Acetal is one of the best engineering plastics for precision CNC machining. It produces short, clean chips, holds tight tolerances, and gives excellent surface finishes. Unlike nylon, acetal does not require pre-drying before machining.

CNC turning — achieves tolerances of ±0.05mm
Milling — use sharp carbide cutters at high speed
Drilling — standard HSS drill bits, use moderate feed rate
Tapping — excellent thread holding strength
Note: acetal cannot be solvent bonded — use mechanical fasteners or cyanoacrylate

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Delrin and Acetal?+
Delrin is DuPont's brand name for acetal homopolymer (POM-H), while generic acetal is typically copolymer (POM-C). Homopolymer has slightly higher mechanical strength and stiffness, while copolymer has better chemical resistance and easier processing. For most applications, the performance difference is minimal.
Can acetal be glued?+
Acetal is very difficult to bond with adhesives due to its low surface energy and chemical resistance. Cyanoacrylate (super glue) gives moderate bond strength. For structural joints, mechanical fastening (screws, press-fits, snap-fits) is strongly recommended.
Is acetal suitable for food contact?+
Yes — natural (white/cream) acetal is FDA approved for direct food contact. It is widely used in food processing machinery for conveyor components, guides, and rollers.
