Trade Names: Ertalon. NYLON PA6G plastic is a material that offers an optimal combination of mechanical strength, stiffness, toughness, mechanical damping properties, together with a favorable electrical insulating ability, and a good chemical resistance make this nylon a "general purpose" grade for mechanical construction and maintenance.

Nylon is the most widely used engineering plastic for machined components. Its self-lubricating properties, high wear resistance, and excellent machinability make it the material of choice for gears, bushings, rollers, and wear strips across virtually every industry.

Fabrication & Processing

Nylon machines beautifully on lathes, mills, and CNC machines. It produces long, continuous chips and excellent surface finishes. Pre-drying is recommended before machining thick sections to minimise dimensional changes from moisture absorption.

CNC turning — excellent surface finish, tight tolerances achievable
Milling — use sharp carbide tools with positive rake angles
Drilling — standard HSS drill bits work well
Tapping — nylon holds threads well for M4 and larger
Note: account for 2–3% moisture expansion in dimensioning

Frequently Asked Questions

Does nylon absorb water?+
Yes — nylon absorbs moisture from the atmosphere (up to 2.5% at equilibrium). This causes dimensional growth of approximately 0.3% per 1% moisture absorbed. For precision parts, consider Acetal (Delrin) which has much lower water absorption, or machine nylon parts slightly undersize to allow for expansion.
Is nylon better than acetal for gears?+
For gears, nylon is generally preferred when impact loading or noise reduction is important. Acetal is preferred when dimensional precision and low moisture environments are critical. For nylon-on-nylon gear pairs, consider using different grades to reduce wear.
What is the difference between cast and extruded nylon?+
Cast nylon (PA6G) is polymerised in a mould, producing larger stock sizes with better crystallinity, higher mechanical properties, and lower internal stresses. Extruded nylon (PA6) is melted and pushed through a die — it is available in smaller sizes and is slightly less expensive.
