Slumped acrylic is a heat-forming technique where acrylic sheet is heated and allowed to 'slump' or drape over a mould, creating organic, flowing shapes. This technique produces stunning curved and shaped acrylic pieces for architectural, artistic, and commercial applications.

Holland Plastics specialises in custom slumped acrylic forming for architectural features, curved sneeze guards, display cases, and artistic installations. Our forming oven accommodates sheets up to 2500 x 1830mm in thicknesses from 3mm to 25mm.

The Slumping Process

The sheet is placed over a custom mould in a temperature-controlled oven, heated to approximately 160°C, and allowed to slowly drape into shape under its own weight. The process produces smooth, stress-free curves without the optical distortion associated with mechanical bending.

Chemical Resistance

Acrylics are unaffected by most household detergents, cleaning agents, and solutions of inorganic acids, alkalies, and aliphatic hydrocarbons. Acrylics should not be used with chlorinated and aromatic hydrocarbons, esters and ketones.

Frequently Asked Questions

What shapes can be achieved with slumping?+
Slumping produces single-curve and compound-curve shapes depending on the mould design. Common shapes include cylinders, domes, waves, and custom architectural profiles. The process works best for gentle, flowing curves rather than sharp angles.
How much does custom slumped acrylic cost?+
Pricing depends on the sheet size, thickness, and mould complexity. Simple single-curve bends are most cost-effective, while custom compound-curve moulds add to the cost. Contact us with your project requirements for a detailed quote.
Can coloured acrylic be slumped?+
Yes — all Perspex® colours including transparent, opal, and solid colours can be slumped. The colour remains consistent throughout the forming process with no distortion or fading.
